I loved Reckless Traveler! Obviously the adventure through several South American countries is interesting, but it’s Walter Rhein’s sense of humor that really makes the book come alive, as he navigates through all the complexities of being an American in a foreign country language barriers, passports, guerrillas, foreign customs, and did I mention language barriers? That comes up a couple of times creating some humorous complications.
I read this book over Labor Day weekend, and it was a fun read that kept me turning pages and left me wanting more! It’s entertaining and a must read for all reckless travelers the world over. There are so many things you’ll relate to. In the end, this is a wonderful book by a brave, insightful adventurer at heart.
I reviewed two books by Walter Rhein, one of which was Reckless Traveler. I decided to read it first to get it out of the way because I don’t really enjoy non-fiction very much and from the description on the back of the book it didn’t sound like my cup of tea. My assumptions were wrong, this book is incredible!
Reckless Traveler is so good that I started it Sunday night and finished it Monday afternoon. Walter grabs the reader’s attention from the title of the very first chapter, “Kidnapped by Terrorists”. The title alone makes you want to find out what happens next.
The whole first chapter happens in the present when men in uniforms with AK47’s stop the bus Walter is on in Ecuador. The last 10 years of Walter’s life flash before his eyes. In the next 40 chapters, readers relive his adventures from his time abroad in Peru. Each thrilling adventure leaves you wanting to read more to see what happens to Walter next. The last chapter of the book returns back to the present and wraps up the adventure with the uniformed men in Ecuador, and once again, we learn the lesson Walter has been learning over and over the past 10 years.Reckless Traveler
Most autobiographies are not very interesting, but Reckless Traveler reads like a novel.
It is amazing to think that this normal man from Wisconsin lived such adventures in such a short period of time. Especially when you consider he lived through more in 10 years abroad than most people live through in a lifetime. We have the chance to learn some of the lessons he learned as we read of Walter’s adventures in Reckless Traveler. I learned many of the same lessons that Walter learned when I lived abroad, but he puts these lessons into words much better than I ever could. We can easily forget these types of lessons if they are not put into practice and thought about often.
It would be possible to make Reckless Traveler into an action movie or five! Walter has so many fun, scary, and interesting adventures! Each chapter contains a new story, a new lesson, and a new adventure. He tries to find the good side of things and usually turns bad things into funny ones. He has a good sense of humor and uses it to cope with his adventures. While reading Reckless Traveler you really feel like you are in Peru living the adventures with him.Reckless Traveler
I would recommend Reckless Traveler to anyone who loves traveling and adventure. Walter’s experiences are enjoyable to read and teach life lessons some people never learn.
The Reckless Traveler is a book about someone who didn’t join a tour group but immersed themselves in the culture, the landscape and customs of the real people living in Peru. I’ve heard from other travelers, that this is a great way to travel, but often dangerous as you bump innocently into guerillas and others on the ‘roads less traveled. I’ve actually heard of people being stuck there for years after having their passports stolen by the guerillas as well as their money. So kudos to you for having the courage and good fortune to be the story teller.
I have to say that one of the things I loved the most was Walter’s writing. He’s an exceptional author and I’m pretty tough about what I’ll read. He has a way of allowing the reader to really get to know the people he meets and the adventures he takes. I’ve always wanted to travel to Peru, might not make it this time. So thanks, thanks for showing me an incredibly rich world. Great job!
It's often said, "write about what you know." And here in Reckless Traveler, Walter Rhein describes his true-life experiences on the ups and downs of living in another country. In this case, Peru.
A land of wonder and adventure, and of fear and excitement, Peru is also a magical place where 'tea' is the cure-all remedy for just about any ailment you can think of. A place where some of the friendliest people in the world rub shoulders on a daily basis with pickpockets and conmen out to fleece you of the shirt off your back. And most of all, Peru is a' lesson in life' that clearly displays a universal constant we've all suspected for years...that no matter where you go, red tape and bribery rules, and bureaucrats really DO take special classes in being difficult, unfriendly and obstructive. (You'll see what I mean as you read his adventures).
Often humorous, sometimes serious, but always entertaining and informative, Reckless Traveler takes you on a journey of what life COULD be like, if only you were brave enough to try.
